PERIODONTAL TREATMENT

Periodontitis is a type of chronic gum disease that affects the gums and the bones supporting the teeth. It is known to be the leading cause of tooth loss all over the world. Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Nine out of ten people have periodontal disease and are not even aware of it since the disease is usually painless in the early stages. Recent research has suggested a link may exist between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease etc. Some of the common signs of periodontal disease are bleeding gums, loose teeth, formation of new gaps between teeth, bad breath and pus around the teeth and gums, loss of gum around a tooth and red, swollen gums.

Diagnosis

This is done by using a small, blunt probe to measure the pocket or space between the tooth and the gums. As periodontal disease progresses, the pockets get deeper.Your dentist will measure the pocket depths, the amount of bleeding, inflammation, tooth mobility, tartar etc to make a diagnosis that will usually fall into one of categories below:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the initial stage of periodontal disease. Here, the gums become tender and inflamed and prone to bleeding because of plaque.

Periodontitis

The plaque hardens in to calculus or tartar. The gums begin to recede away from the teeth. The space between the gums and teeth widens and gets filled with bacteria and pus. The gums swell up and bleed easily. A slight bone loss occurs.

Advanced Periodontitis

The gums, bone, and periodontal ligament get damaged and the affected teeth become loose and mobile. They develop a very high risk of being lost. Moderate to severe bone loss may occur.

Maintenance

Plaque can turn into tartar within a short span of 24 hours. It is therefore essential to control plaque formation by practicing good dental hygiene daily at home. However, there are parts of your teeth that are hard to reach and require dental attention.Regular periodontal cleanings are recommended usually twice in a year. At these cleaning appointments, your gum and gum pockets will be examined to ensure that they are healthy. Plaque and tartar will be thoroughly removed from above and below the gum line. These appointments also include examining your dental x-rays. They are important to determine tooth and root positions and to detect any decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. Any existing fillings, crowns, implants will be checked and tooth surfaces will be examined for signs of decay. An oral cancer screening will also be conducted and the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums will be examined.

Treatment

The treatment for periodontal disease is determined as per each individual’s case. Periodontal disease advances as the gum pockets or space between the tooth and gums gets filled with bacteria, plaque, and tartar, causing irritation to the surrounding tissues. When this condition remains untreated, it causes damage to the gums and also affects the bone that supports the teeth. If the disease is arrested in the initial stages and no severe damage has occurred, regular dental cleanings and improving daily oral hygiene habits dental cleanings will help treat the disease. In more severe cases, Scaling and Root Planning will be prescribed.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing is a technique of deep cleaning. It is usually done one quadrant of the mouth at a time while the area is numb. In this procedure, tartar, plaque, and toxins are removed from above and below the gum line (scaling) and the rough spots on root surfaces are smoothened (planing). This procedure helps the gum tissue to heal and causes the pockets to shrink. Medications, special medicated mouth rinses, and an electric toothbrush may be recommended to help control infection and healing. If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planning, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean. Your dentist may also recommend that you see a Periodontist (specialist of the gums and supporting bone).

Splinting

Splinting is a technique which is performed by using a thin steel wire or ribbond material to bind the teeth that have come loose and become mobile. The tooth being treated is bound to the adjoining stable tooth to make it stable. GIH Dental Clinic is adept in the Splinting procedure and uses techniques to minimize and eliminate any pain. Contact us on () to know more about how we could help you with the Splinting procedure.

Peridontal Surgeries

In some cases periodontal surgeries are required when deep pockets remain beneath the gum even after extensive cleaning sessions have been conducted. These pockets can be reduced by opting for periodontal surgery. The surgery makes it possible to remove diseased tissue and repositions and shapes the bones and gums and the tissues supporting the teeth. The type of surgical procedure depends on each individual’s diagnosis.

Porcelain Inlays And Onlays

Porcelain inlays or onlays are indirect fillings made of porcelain that fit into or onto the affected tooth. Their purpose is to strengthen the tooth by holding it together and simultaneously retaining the natural color. Porcelain inlays and outlays are used when there is insufficient tooth structure to support a filling and when the tooth not require a crown.Inlays are used to fit into the leftover space after an old filling has decayed or when a cavity has been removed. Onlays are like partial crowns that sit on the tooth and builds up its shape.Receiving porcelain inlays or outlays requires two visits to GIH Dental Clinic. In the first visit, the decay will be removed and an impression will be taken. This impression will be used to create the indirect filling and record the shape of the affected tooth and the adjoining teeth. We will give you a temporary filling to protect the affected tooth while the inlay or outlay is being made. This temporary filling will be removed during your next appointment and the indirect filling will be fitted.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride Treatment is a safe and effective treatment for the prevention of cavities in children. Fluoride is a mineral that fortifies teeth and makes the teeth less susceptible to decay. Although we receive fluoride from food and water, professional fluoride treatments are sometimes necessary if there are pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth or if the root surfaces are exposed or sensitive. Frequent intake of sugar and carbohydrate, inadequate saliva productions and insufficient fluoride intake also call for a professional fluoride treatment. We at GIH Dental Clinic use the latest proven technique for applying fluoride to your child’s teeth without causing any risk.

Pit And Fissure Sealants

Sealants are coated on the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves of teeth. They help prevent dental decay and reduce the risk of cavities. Teeth with these grooves are prone to decay and chipping. Sealants are made of clear or shaded plastic and help keep the teeth cavity-free.The process of sealing takes only a few minutes per tooth. The teeth to be sealed are cleansed and dried. A solution is then applied to the enamel surface to help the sealant bond to the teeth. The teeth are then rinsed and dried. Sealant material is carefully applied onto the enamel to coat the deep grooves or depressions.

Third Molar Surgery

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt within the mouth. They do not usually align properly. It sometimes becomes necessary to extract them if they grow sideways or partially emerge from the gum or when they remain trapped beneath the gum and bone. Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to erupt successfully. These poorly positioned impacted teeth are likely to prove problematic. When they erupt partially, the opening around the tooth allows bacteria to grow and causes an infection. The pressure from the erupting wisdom tooth may move other teeth and disrupt the natural alignment of teeth. Tumors or cysts can occur around the impacted wisdom tooth. It becomes essential to extract these teeth as early as possible.

Dental X-Rays

Very often, Dental X-Rays are required to understand the teeth, bones, and underlying tissues. They help identify problems with the teeth, mouth, and jaw. Dental X-Rays can reveal cavities, unseen dental structures and display bone loss that is invisible to the naked eye.

Dental Implants

Introduction Implants are a good way to replace missing teeth. They are a fixed solution to removable partial or complete dentures. Implants are a good option as they provide support and stability for these partial or complete dentures.Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth (generally made of titanium) that are surgically implanted into the upper or lower jaw bone by a dentist or periodontist. The teeth fixed to the implants look natural and help restore your smile. Implants are strong and will last many years. Very occasionally, they require re-tightening or replacement if worn out.

Why Should You Get a Dental Implant?

You may require a dental implant in the following cases:

*To replace a missing tooth or teeth without affecting the adjacent teeth.

*To cure biting problems caused by the teeth shifting into missing tooth area.

*To give yourself a confident smile.

*To help restore chewing, speech, and digestion.

*To restore or enhance facial tissues.

*To support a bridge or denture, making them more secure and comfortable.

Procedure

It is very important for a patient to understand the treatment he is undergoing. It helps him feel reassured and relaxed. We will take X-rays and impressions of your jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. The area will be made numb so that you don’t feel any pain and we will surgically place the implant into the bone. It will be allowed to heal and integrate itself onto the bone. This usually takes up to six months. Another surgery may be required depending upon the type of implantinso as to place the “post” that will hold the artificial tooth in place. With other implants the post and anchor are already attached and placed at the same time. After a few weeks of healing, the artificial teeth will be made made and fitted to the post portion of the anchor. A number of fittings may be required and this may take one to two months. After some time, the artificial teeth will be fixed to the implant. Your teeth will feel stabile and comfortable. We will guide you with instructions on how to care for your implants when the treatment is complete. Practicing good oral hygiene, good eating habits, and regular dental check ups will aid in the life of your new implant.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea (alternatively sleep apnoea and abbreviated as “OSA”) is a sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep. These episodes, called apneas (literally “without breath”), each last long enough so one or more breaths are missed, and occur repeatedly throughout sleep. People afflicted with sleep apnea rarely (if ever) are aware of having difficulty breathing, even upon awakening. Sleep apnea is recognised as a problem by others witnessing the individual during episodes, or is suspected because of its effects on the body (sequelae). The definitive diagnosis of sleep apnea is made by polyspmnography (sleep study). It has only recently been appreciated that OSA can be a serious health condition and that its prevalence in the population, especially in men, is quite high. Evaluation, treatment and management of OSA is the provenance of the sleep specialist who is a physician with specialty training in various sleep disorders. Oral appliances can sometimes be helpful in the treatment of OSA, particularly in moderate to mild OSA, but are not considered first time treatment.Prosthodontists, in particular maxillofacial Prosthodontists are comfortable and familiar with fabricating and using such applicances. Clinic Prosthodontists work closely with sleep specialists in the sleep disorder clinic and throughout the region, when other treatment modalities are not effective in the treatment of OSA.
